Our Current Project
This year the Experimental Vehicle Team will be participating in the Winston Solar Challenge, a two-week-long cross country race from Dallas, Texas, to Golden, Colorado, a total of about 1100 miles. The type of car we are building is a compact, single person vehicle (example to the right), which will run entirely on battery power. It will also have a convenient, detachable solar panel trailer, so one could ride it around, and then simply hook it back up when finished. Our vision for the car's future goes beyond just competing in the Winston Solar Challenge, however. We hope to use it as an example of an alternative method of transportation for urban commuters. One could drive the car to work and let it charge in the sun, or, if the sun is not out, then simply plug it into any electrical socket. For safety, it will have crush zones to help absorb energy and protect the driver inside in the event of an accident.
